Acorns (under 5’s)

“We are little ACORNS
Jesus loves us so
He sends showers of love
To help us grow.”

‘Acorns’ is a group run by members of St. Mary’s Church. It is designed for Babies and Toddlers under 5 years old and their Mums/Dads or carers too.

It is held during term time on alternate Tuesday afternoons, (2nd & 4th week of the month) from 1.30 – 2.45 pm in St. Mary’s Hall.

We are in need of more helpers - anyone interested please contact
Nicky Doherty (nicky.doherty@ntlworld.com)

What is Acorns?
It is a fun time during which we introduce the children to Stories from the Bible and ideas about God very simply through stories, art and craft activities, singing and sometimes games.

It is designed to be light-hearted and fun – an early introduction to life as part of a wider Church family.

It is not only a time for the children to learn and enjoy themselves alongside other children, as we round off each session with refreshments, providing an opportunity for new parents to get to know others within our church community.

Activities.
We have covered many simple religious ideas and issues through a different topic area each alternate Tuesday afternoon, in St Mary’s Hall.

*The Creation Story
*Jesus’ Disciples
*Birds as God’s Creatures
*Autumn
*Eyes and Ears
*The Good Samaritan
*Shrove Tuesday
*Teddy Bear’s Picnic
*Festivals: Christmas, Easter etc.

We have covered these issues through various media and the children have produced some super things to take home to remind them of our work and thoughts at Acorns. These have included mobiles, cards, pictures, models, spinners, borders, gift bags to name but a few. They also enjoy a colouring activity for each topic.

Alongside Art & Craft ideas we have a singing session during which we sing the more simple songs from ‘Junior Praise’. I accompany on the guitar and the children each play a musical instrument. This works well with the babies who join our sessions.

We also continue to start each session with our special Acorns prayer and song. The oak tree is also up at each meeting on which we hang our individually made (and named) acorn to show who attends and to give each child a sense of belonging to a part of a church group and the wider Family of God.
