ARBORETUM

Planting was completed by the end of April, but the new trees were then subjected to a prolonged dry spell of weather; the roots could make no growth in the parched ground and we were in danger of losing at least some of them. Using the Parish Council's water bowser, an emergency rota of volunteers managed to get 3 gallons of water to each tree twice a week for nearly six weeks, and it looks now as though only two trees may not make it.
We hope to affix proper labelling (including botanical names) in the near future, and then one might say the arboretum is open for business!

See below for the planting list.

The arboretum was funded by a generous grant from Nottinghamshire County Council, which also paid for (i) improvement work to the path from the Bateman Road entrance to the Lantern Lane corner of the park, (ii) a sturdy, lockable notice board opposite the sculpture, with a second promised to go near the Bateman Road entrance, and (iii) a couple of picnic bench/tables suitable to accommodate a wheelchair.

FUND RAISING

Some of the work that the Friends undertake does not cost very much money - just a lot of muscle power and good will, but if we are to continue enhancing what the park has to offer beyond being merely a pleasant place to wander in, then MONEY IS NEEDED.
New members mean new ideas as well as funds, and are specially welcome - and old members, please make sure you renew your subscription when the time comes.
Thanks to those who supported our stall at the Carnival in June, when we raised well over £130.
Also remember that Meadow Park notelet packs are available at the Parish Office (£2.00 per pack of 10), and copies of the photo collection (A4 gloss paper, £2) can also be ordered there.
